About African Lions

The African lion is at the top of the food chain and is often called “the king of the jungle.” It is the biggest carnivore in Africa, and remains one of the most feared predators on the planet. Lions are well known for
their courage and strength. They are the only cats in the world that live together in groups called "prides". All of the female lions in a pride are related so it’s one big family working together in the wild.
Lion Facts
- A lion’s roar is so loud that you can hear it from five miles away.
- Lions like to roam at night, and they sleep and rest during the day.
- Lions can eat up to 80 pounds of meat in one sitting! After that they can go a few days without eating again.
- Male lions are the only ones that have manes, the large circle of brown or black hair around their heads.

A Lion's Diet
African lions are carnivores, which means they only eat meat and hunt animals for food. Female lions are the main hunters, and they work together to catch zebras, antelopes, and other big creatures. Lions are very effective hunters because they work together and often have an organized plan when stalking prey.
Lions Lie Around - A Lot!
A typical pride of lions includes two or three males, around twelve females, and their cubs. They like to sleep during the day, and relax in the shade - especially after eating a big meal. African lions often hunt at night before the sun comes up, and lion cubs begin helping to hunt when they are just a year old. While the female lions are out hunting for food, male lions protect their territory. You can usually find African lions on savannas, grassy plains, and dry woodlands, but they are rarely seen in dense forests.

Baby Lions
After being pregnant for about three-and-a-half months, female lions usually give birth to three or four cubs. The cubs are very weak at first, and they are protected by their mother for at least two years. Female lion cubs stay with their pride as they grow older, but male lion cubs will go out to find a pride of their own.

A Lion's Life
An average African lion lives to be up to 16 years old in the wild. They used to roam throughout most of Africa and in parts of Europe and Asia. However, because many of their habitats have been destroyed, they are found today only in parts of sub-Saharan Africa and a very small part of Asia. Today, there are less than 21,000 African Lions left in the wild.
